The Alcyon Shipping way…
1846
With 120 tons carrying capacity, the new built Argyro is the first recorded merchant sailing ship owned by the Dambassis family
1857
By re-investing profits, a second ship the Aggeliki was soon after ordered and launched in 1857
1870
The Alcyon fleet numbered a total of three merchant sailing ships owned and managed by the sons of John D. Dambassis: Demosthenes, Michael and Andrew
1900
The last sailing ship managed by the family, the Dimitrios of 269 tons, was purchased
1905
Foreseeing the potential of steam powered engines Alcyon purchased the Ioannis, the company's first steam turbine vessel
1939
Despite the ongoing global wars and crises, Alcyon fleet is maintained constant at three-four steam ships managed at any given time
1947
In recognition of the company's vessel lost in WWII, the US & Greek governments awarded the Dambassis family the John W. Troy, at US$ 580,000
1960's
Alcyon established presence in the then global maritime centers, with representative offices in New York and London
1989
The first significant move towards larger Panamax bulk carriers was made with the purchase of m.v. Nightlight
1994
Recognising the economies of scale, the company turned its focus to larger Capesize dry-bulk carriers and purchased the SGC Seawind (137,241 dwt). Foreseeing China's potential as leader in the Pacific Far East Basin, Alcyon opened representa-tive offices in Beijing and Shanghai to function as a link with local markets
1997
While bringing over the years many profitable charters to the Group, the company's Chinese office also created strong business relationships with major Chinese corporations and was instrumental in forming joint ventures with the Chinese energy giant Huaneng Group
2003
By 2003, at the start of the Chinese super-cycle, the company's fleet had reached 875,000 deadweight tons
2008
During the unprecedented boom of the market, Alcyon was hauling cargoes with a fleet of 6 vessels transporting over 8 million tons of cargoes per year. Recognizing the imminent turn of fundamentals Alcyon proceeded to steadily divest and one of our SNP deal the Nightflight defined the market at US$ 158m as one of the highest sale price for a second-hand capesize bulk-carrier ever achieved
Today
In an ongoing effort to renew the fleet and recognizing the necessity for sustainable environmental development, Alcyon has constructed and taken delivery recently of five eco‐type newbuildings built to the highest specs of efficiency by leading Korean & Japanese shipyards. Alcyon’s fleet today has a carrying capacity well over 1.25 million deadweight tons.
